Mother's Day in the UK

Mother's Day in the UK

Mother's Day, celebrated on March 14th in the UK, is more than a day to honour and thank our mothers. It's a reflection of family bonds, home life, and the gradual transition of young adults as they fly the nest.

Across the UK, there are over 4.6 million mums with dependent children, forming the core of countless family homes. In addition, an estimated 6.1 million (39%) young adults aged 16–34 still live with their parents. This speaks to a trend where leaving home is a significant life milestone, often delayed by various factors.

The patterns of leaving home differ between young men and women. Females tend to fly the nest quicker, with over half having left home by the age of 23, and over 80% by age 26. Young men, on the other hand, typically leave later. Over one-third still live at home aged 26, and even by age 34, it's estimated that 1 in 12 young men have yet to embark on independent living.

The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated this process. Many young people spent more time with their parents than expected, studying, training, and working from home. This unexpected closeness likely deepened family bonds but also posed challenges and delayed the traditional patterns of young adults setting up their own households.

As we approach Mother's Day, it's a chance to reflect on the nurturing environment that our mothers and families have provided. Whether it's supporting young adults as they prepare to leave or welcoming them back during unexpected times, the family home remains a symbol of love, safety, and connection.
